Cody Gakpo has thanked Alexis Mac Allister after the Liverpool midfielder's contribution sent the Reds four points clear at the top of the Premier League. The Argentine was on target for Arne Slot's side as they cruised to an emphatic 6-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur.

Mac Allister doubled the lead midway through the first-half as he headed home from six yards, shortly after Luis Diaz opened the scoring with a diving header. Liverpool were in full control throughout the opening 45 but the midfielder was caught on the ball and Spurs' James Maddison capitalised, curling home to reduce the arrears.

The one-goal cushion was short-lived as Dominik Szoboszlai restored the two-goal advantage on the stroke of half-time. After the interval, it was more of the same in the second-half with the Premier League leaders with Mohamed Salah scoring twice to take Liverpool into a commanding lead.'

Ange Postecoglou's side fought back and brought the deficit to within two goal but Luis Diaz completed the rout with five minutes remaining. Taking to Instagram, the 25-year-old said: "An important victory and a goal, to keep dreaming. It’s a joy to be part of this team!

"Thank you to the fans for the support that comes from everywhere. Let’s keep pushing, @liverpoolfc."

Gakpo was among the Liverpool players to show their support to the social media post and the Dutchman commented: "Thankyou (sic) Macca."

Speaking after the triumph, the World Cup-winner detailed that the feeling of victory was replaced by frustration at full-time. He told BBC Sport: "We spoke about it in the dressing room, we are not happy with the fact we conceded three goals, that's very clear, but we score six, that’s not very easy.

"Tottenham are a good team, they press really high, they are aggressive, we knew we had to put the ball in behind and score the opportunities we had.

"We are happy with the result, there are many things to improve but we’re happy to get the three points. At the back we have to play simple and get the ball to them [attackers]. We worked on this the whole week and we try to improve every single day.

"We know we have to concede less, we are not happy with conceding three today, but it is what it is, we play against really good teams. Maybe we have to defend better but also we know we are dangerous when we attack."
