Gary Neville hopes Newcastle United can reach another Carabao Cup final because the Manchester United legend wants to see a 'great club' end their long wait for silverware.
Newcastle are bidding to contest a second Wembley showpiece in three seasons after booking their place in the semi-finals last week. Newcastle will face Arsenal in the last four and Dan Burn has backed his side 'against anyone' over two legs.
Neville will be among those throwing his support behind Newcastle as Eddie Howe's team bid to end 69 years of hurt since their last domestic trophy win.
"I hope that Newcastle can," Neville said on his self-titled podcast. "I want these great clubs - the likes of Newcastle, Aston Villa, Everton, Tottenham - to win trophies.
"You want to win trophies. You want to see these teams win trophies if it's not your own team. Let's see what happens in the next four or five weeks."
Fellow Sky Sports pundit Tim Sherwood suggested it might be Newcastle's year after claiming that title-chasing Arsenal have got 'bigger prizes out there with the teams that they pick'. Whatever XI Arsenal put out, it promises to be an intriguing clash. Although Newcastle have only won once at the Emirates, Arsenal have lost three of their last four games at St James' Park and Mikel Arteta's side tasted defeat on Tyneside as recently as last month.
Interestingly, the first-leg on January 7 is sandwiched between a trip to Brighton and an FA Cup clash against Manchester United for Arsenal while the Gunners host champions Manchester City just three days before the return fixture at St James' on February 5.
