Report: PIF’s new transfer strategy at Newcastle goes against what Darren Eales said last year

PIF have made a bold change to their transfer approach just days before the January window opens.

Newcastle United are expected to be relatively quiet over January, but that could all change if sales are completed.

Due to Profit and Sustainability Rules, Newcastle will have to sell to buy in January despite Eddie Howe and Paul Mitchell wanting to strengthen the squad.

A new right winger is a top priority with Newcastle linked to PSV’s Johan Bakayoko. Sadly, though, the restricted budget means a deal is unlikely unless money is raised through sales.

One nuclear option available to PIF is to sell a star player with Alexander Isak, Bruno Guimaraes and Anthony Gordon all seen as extremely valuable assets.

PIF make decision on selling Newcastle stars in January

Isak continues to be linked with Arsenal ahead of the January window, while Man City are interested in Guimaraes.

The sale of either player would likely bring in up to £100m in what would be a huge boost to the club’s PSR situation and the transfer budget.

According to The Chronicle, PIF have now decided that “only astronomical bids” would even be considered in January.

The transfer approach being adopted by Newcastle is that the club are better off keeping hold of the players currently in the first-team squad.

It means Howe has the backing of Newcastle’s owners to keep hold of his star players even if a huge bid arrives next month.

What Darren Eales said about selling star players last year

It seems PIF have completed a U-turn on their transfer approach and have gone against what CEO Darren Eales suggested last year.

As quoted by Express, last year Eales said that “every player has a price in the world of PSR”.

That no longer seems to be the case. The likes of Isak, Guimaraes, Gordon and Sandro Tonali are priceless to Newcastle and their long-term project to reach the top.

Regardless of Newcastle’s poor PSR position, the club do not want to cash in on their stars simply in order to free up funds to replace them.
