'We feel': Eddie Howe gives the reason why he's not been picking Lewis Miley for Newcastle this …

Newcastle United fans have not seen much of Lewis Miley this season.

The 18-year-old has only made two senior appearances so far, with his first Premier League minutes of the campaign coming in Newcastle’s 4-0 win over Ipswich Town.

Lewis Miley was brought on in the second half, with the teenager replacing Bruno Guimaraes in the 80th minute.

It was a tidy cameo from the academy graduate, as Miley reminded everyone of his immense quality and potential as the Magpies closed out a comfortable victory at Portman Road.

Miley himself looked comfortable, just like he did last season. He was Newcastle United’s breakout star of the 2023/24 season, with the Toon wonderkid asked to play a lot of football before succumbing to injury.

Eddie Howe wants to be extra careful with Lewis Miley

And that is the key reason why Toon fans have not had the chance to watch Miley too much since his return to fitness.

Ahead of Newcastle’s game against Aston Villa, Eddie Howe was asked about Miley.

“I think he’s handling himself really well,” he said.

“He’s training well behind the scenes. We’ve tried to be really careful with him to make sure there’s been no reoccurrence of his injury. For someone so young and the physical demands he faced last season, we feel this year we need to respect that and manage that, and make sure we give him the best chance of staying fit.

“He’s looking good now. Physically, he’s looking stronger than he did last year. He’s worked hard in the gym. His body is turning into a man’s body. I’m really pleased with his progress.”

More minutes in 2025 for Lewis Miley

Newcastle United are not going to overexpose Miley, after they were forced to do just that during the previous campaign. That culminated in an injury, followed by another injury ahead of pre-season.

The youngster is fit again, but will have to wait for his opportunities. In recent weeks, he has sometimes not even been on the bench.

But he has been in the matchday squad for Newcastle’s previous two games, with Sean Longstaff then Joelinton suspended. He was really impressive when he was introduced against Ipswich, and Toon supporters would love to see more of him in 2025.

They could be in luck, as Howe does not want to loan Miley out. He intends to keep the midfielder in and around the first-team, while his minutes could increase if Sean Longstaff leaves the club.

It has been reported that Longstaff sees his future away from Newcastle, which could see Miley move up the pecking order.
