Troy Deeney has named Everton defender James Tarkowski in his Premier League Team of the Week.

Along with Tarkowski, who kept a clean sheet in the 0-0 game against Chelsea, the former Watford striker has named four Liverpool players – Mo Salah, Luis Diaz, Trent Alexander-Arnold and Dominik Szoboszlai.

The Toffees were extremely organised against their London opponents and their failure to score was something that surprised Gary Lineker.

Deeney told the BBC [23 December]: “He is quietly going about his business in defence, like Everton are quietly going about their business. They messed things up for Arsenal and Chelsea in recent weeks and actually look like they could have nicked more against them.”

Everton defender James Tarkowski has improved remarkably

Tarkowski’s performance was particularly noteworthy given his relatively slow start to the season, which has seen him grow into a pivotal role in the Toffees backline.

His ability to organise and lead the defence was instrumental in neutralising Chelsea’s attack.

The presence of Branthwaite alongside him has significantly contributed to this improvement.

Branthwaite’s youthful energy and defensive acumen complement Tarkowski’s experience, creating a solid partnership.

Their combined efforts have not only bolstered Everton’s defence but have also helped them become a formidable side to play against.

It remains to be seen if the Toffees go into next season with this as their first-choice pairing or if they want to sign an upgrade on Tarkowski.
