Tottenham head into Christmas Day sitting 11th in the Premier League table after suffering their eighth defeat of the league season on Sunday. Facing league leaders Liverpool at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium, Spurs fell to a 6-3 loss in what was another crazy game involving Ange Postecoglou's men.
Unfortunately receiving a hammer blow on the stroke of half-time after conceding for a third time moments after James Maddison had reduced parity, Liverpool went on to add another two goals courtesy of Mohamed Salah. Dejan Kulusevski and Dominic Solanke gave Spurs some late hope, with Luiz Diaz then destroying any chance of an unlikely comeback in the final few minutes after scoring his second of the game and Liverpool's sixth.
It was very much a game that highlighted the two sides to Postecoglou's Tottenham. Extremely fragile right now with not a lot of Premier League experience in their backline due to a host of injuries, Spurs also demonstrated that they can score for fun after becoming only the second team this term to put three past Slot's impressive team.
Tottenham may sit 11th in the table but they are remarkably the Premier League's top goalscorers after hitting 39 goals in only 17 games. Spurs just need things to go their way on the injury front for once as they hope for smoother waters in 2025 after enduring so many ups and downs over the past couple of months.
Maybe only boasting 13 or 14 first-team players at present, all of whom are extremely tired after a challenging month with games coming thick and fast, Postecoglou is trying to cope with the demands of a hectic schedule and produce results all while having to do so without some influential players. As mentioned on the latest episode of the Gold & Guest Talk Tottenham podcast, even Arne Slot, who has enjoyed a remarkable debut season at Anfield, would struggle to get consistent results at Tottenham right now when working with the same batch of tired players every few days.
In the latest episode of their podcast, Tottenham writers Alasdair Gold and Rob Guest reflect on the team's 6-3 defeat to Liverpool, the support for Postecoglou inside the stadium, why changing the manager won't necessarily fix the current predicament and so much more after another rollercoaster of a game in N17.
