Manchester United travel to relegation-threatened Wolves when the Premier League returns on Boxing Day.
The Red Devils were beaten 3-0 by high-flying Bournemouth at Old Trafford last time out, leaving Ruben Amorim’s side 13th in the top flight table with the halfway point in the season fast approaching.
Wolves have endured a dismal campaign so far but new manager Vitor Pereira got off to a flying start, overseeing a 3-0 win against Leicester City in his first match in charge on Sunday.
It isn’t yet clear how busy Man United will be during the upcoming January transfer window, but it appears that the club are set to trigger an extension in the contract of one of their current players.
According to Football Insider, the Manchester club are set to trigger a 12-month extension to defender Harry Maguire’s contract.
The Englishman has endured a mixed time at Old Trafford since joining from Leicester City in 2019, making more than 200 appearances for the Red Devils but also enduring spells of poor form.
Maguire’s contract is set to be extended by a further 12 months
The centre-back has recently re-established himself as a regular under new head coach Ruben Amorim, and the report claims that the club are therefore set to trigger an extension to his deal, which is currently set to expire at the end of the season.
With Maguire soon set to enter into the final six months of his current deal, the England international would be able to sign a pre-contract agreement with any foreign club in January.
United are hoping to fend off interest in him, though, by triggering a year-long extension.
Maguire has been involved in all of United’s last five Premier League matches, starting the last two.
He has benefitted from Amorim’s use of a back three, often lining up alongside Lisandro Martinez and Matthijs De Ligt.
