Since his arrival at FC Barcelona, Hansi Flick has been able to make several Blaugrana players perform at their best levels. This has been clearly the case with players like Robert Lewandowski, Lamine Yamal, Raphinha, Inigo Martinez, Pedri, Pau Cubarsi, etc., who have all been playing at a very high level this season.
However, some other players have been unable to take advantage of the opportunities provided to them by the German tactician, and this is definitely the case with the Dutch midfielder Frenkie de Jong.
The Dutchman has been unable to recover his best level and his form despite having returned to the pitch at the start of October.
Since then, he has mostly been limited to substitute appearances with mixed performances. Hansi Flick even described him as an ‘excellent‘ player following his cameo against Mallorca. However, in the last two games against Leganes and Atletico Madrid, he failed to play a single minute.
Furthermore, his contract with Barcelona is also expiring in 2026, and his negotiations with the Catalan club for renewal have been rocky at best up to now.
In such a scenario, SPORT notes that his market value has also declined significantly, as he is currently valued at €60 million by the Transfermarkt portal.
This valuation is a far cry from the valuation of €90 million that he enjoyed when he won the La Liga title under Xavi and when he was a fixed starter for Barcelona.
His declining form and his contractual situation have both contributed to this decline in his valuation. But whatever the reasons, it is becoming increasingly clear that Barcelona will have to make a loss on a player for whom they paid €75 million fixed and €11 million in variables in 2019, amid competition from Manchester City and Paris Saint Germain.
But this loss might be worth the while as the Blaugranes are keen to shed off his gigantic wages from their bill.
