Dominik Szoboszlai: “We Are Taking Care Of Ourselves, Getting Our Points”

To say Liverpool have enjoyed their start under Arne Slot would be a gross understatement. The Reds, fresh off of a fun 6-3 win over Tottenham, sit four points clear at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand. The Reds also top the Champions League, and are through the the semifinals of the EFL League Cup. In fact, Liverpool have only lost once in all competitions this season (shakes fist at those tricky trees).

After the Spurs match on Sunday, Hungarian midfielder Dominik Szoboszlai spoke to the press about the the hot start Liverpool have had and the belief new manager Arne Slot has instilled in his side, a belief that has rightfully been reciprocated by the players.

“Probably actually no-one expected him, us to start so well - but he is believing in the team, we are believing in him. We need the whole squad, that has showed many times. It doesn’t matter who plays, we give our best on the pitch: Champions League, cups and in the Premier League as well. That’s why we are top of the table and top of the Champions League.”

Liverpool supporters who have been around for more than a minute or two will know that topping the table at Christmas certainly does not mean that is where the squad will finish at the end of the season. Despite the caution, it still certainly feels like this side that is ready to do the business. The Reds have already weathered (and are still weathering) injuries to key players, and have seen player after player step in and put forth a strong shift to help collect points when called upon while other squads have faltered. For Szoboszlai, he very much prefers to be the leader of the pack so he and the squad can focus solely on themselves.

“I think everybody is dreaming of this situation, but we see many times teams who are in front of other teams, and there is still six months to go. We are looking at the table a little bit but also we are just taking care of ourselves, getting our points. Still one more game [in hand] to go in front of the other teams, we want to be as much in front as we could [be].”

So, at least for the next day or so, go ahead and bask in the glow of topping the table at Christmas. Who knows, maybe there will be a couple new contracts revealed as stocking stuffers.
