Barcelona could earn €24 million from the potential sale of a former player to Liverpool

It is possible for players who fail to succeed at FC Barcelona to find better luck elsewhere. Either due to the sky-high demands of the club or the expectations around it, it is simply too much for most players to handle. On other occasions, however, even financial reasons can end up influencing Barcelona to let go of certain players.

Such decisions are rarely because of any one player’s sporting abilities or any kind of significant weakness, and more so about the club’s urgent needs and requirements. One such decision was the sale of 22-year-old midfielder Nico Gonzalez in 2023.

A product of Barça’s youth academy, the midfielder has since established himself at Portuguese club FC Porto and has become a regular starter for them. His recent displays have now even attracted a certain English Premier League side, and it could be a lucrative development for Barcelona.

According to Mundo Deportivo, Liverpool are the side that seem to be interested in Nico Gonzalez’s services and are reportedly contemplating the option to pay his €60 million release clause. In the event that they end up doing that, Barcelona would directly end up pocketing €24 million as well.

That is because of the fact that the player’s contract includes a sell-on clause for 40% of any future sale involving the player. The Catalan giants added this in, alongside a buy-back clause, when they first sold the player to FC Porto for €8.5 million in 2023. Now, with Liverpool reportedly interested, it could end up being beneficial for La Blaugrana.
