Arsenal move ahead of Chelsea in pursuit of 24-year-old defensive star: Reports

close

Arsenal are reportedly leading Chelsea and Tottenham Hotspur in the race for Belgian defender Maxim De Cuyper's signature. According to Caught Offside, the three London sides have emerged as possible destinations for the 24-year-old who has been impressive for Belgian side Club Brugge.

De Cuyper has been an excellent contributor for his side both in attack and defence. He profiles as a left-back with the ability to contribute with the ball, evidenced by his 27 goals and 42 assists in 180 career games.

With Arsenal suffering from terrible luck with regards to their full-backs, adding the Belgian to their squad could serve them well. The likes of Riccardo Calafiori, Takehiro Tomiyasu, Kieran Tierney and Oleksandr Zinchenko have all missed games this season due to injuries.

Further, De Cupyer has also proved to be a useful threat with his set-piece delivery, an area of the game the Gunners have already shown their proficiency in.

Chelsea could also benefit from his addition. While Marc Cucurella has excelled and his backup Renato Veiga has been solid, De Cuyper offers something different from the pair. With one full-back regularly inverting into higher midfield positions under Enzo Maresca, the 24-year-old could create major threats going forward for the Blues.

The full-back is currently valued at €12 million (via Transfermarkt), which will be an attractive price for the clubs interested in securing his services.

Jamie Carragher speaks on Arsenal and Chelsea mindset as Liverpool lead title race following big win over Tottenham

Pundit Jamie Carragher suggested that Arsenal and Chelsea will have watched Liverpool's 6-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur with great concern. The ex-Reds defender claimed that the two sides may understand that it could be difficult to stop the side in the title race.

Speaking after the game on Sky Sports, he said:

"At one stage, we were thinking that if Tottenham score from a corner and it could go 5-4. But I thought Liverpool were outstanding and if you watch that and are Chelsea or Arsenal you think they will take some stopping."

Arne Slot's side were dominant throughout the entire affair but received a small scare when Spurs took it from 5-1 to 5-3 in a space of minutes. Liverpool recovered well and took the win, now finding themselves four points clear with a game in hand.

In the same gameweek, high-flying Chelsea saw their impressive five-game winning run in the league stopped by Everton. The Blues were unable to break down a resolute Toffees defence at Goodison Park and now have 35 points from 17 games.

Finally, Arsenal enjoyed a dominant win over Crystal Palace, putting five past the Eagles as they won 5-1. They are two points shy of the Blues but a major injury suffered by Bukayo Saka could be a dent to their title aspirations.
