New Newcastle United transfer question emerges as right-wing 'upgrade' verdict given

Has Jacob Murphy's upturn in form changed Newcastle United's January plans? After months of many calling for an upgrade at right-wing, the wide man has stepped up of late, providing goals and assists as Eddie Howe's side improve as a collective too.

Speaking on The Monday Show via The Everything is Black and White Podcast, Andrew Musgrove and the Daily Mirror's Simon Bird discuss the January window and whether the thinking should remain the same over where the club's priority lies in the winter market.

"As good as he's doing I have to be honest it's not good enough to stop the need for [Newcastle](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/newcastle-united-fc) to go out and get a right winger in January - I still think that has to be top of the list," Musgrove said.

"I love the fact that Murphy is playing so well and he's enjoying a purple patch but I don't think his numbers will hold up until the end of the season and I think Newcastle still need to go out in January and try and get that upgrade on the right wing."

SImon agreed, calling on fans to get behind Murphy after recent criticism, while also highlighting the need for a signing in that particular role.

"That's true - you want all positions to be upgraded, you want every player to be challenged and if they sell Almiron to Wolves or Leicester - or wherever he might go - which is looking increasingly likely, I think they do have to get another right winger in," Bird replied.

"But that right winger is going to have to come in and realise that Jacob Murphy is on fire at the minute and producing assists and goals and he's going to have to produce too. So yeah you're going to sign for the club thinking I've got to be on my A-game here to get in - so it's good all round I don't think that's like a worry that Newcastle should have.

"I think they must be trying to upgrade that right wing position and Murphy off the bench or Murphy on at certain games is an option. We said Miguel Almiron's numbers wouldn't hold up in that season where he had his purple patch and got 11 goals and was on fire and they did, he kept scoring!

"So maybe if we appreciate Jacob Murphy bit more and get behind him, maybe his numbers will kind of hold up!"
