Reports from the Middle East say that Newcastle United stalwart Martin Dubravka will be leaving when the January transfer window opens - but ChronicleLive readers in our comments section say that it would be "absolutely crazy" to let the goalkeeper go next week.
Newcastle boss Eddie Howe has responded to talk that Dubravka has already "signed" for Saudi Pro League club Al-Shabab, saying: "That is news to me. I have been aware of the rumours and the talk about that deal, but I don't think it is done. Certainly, we would not want to lose a goalkeeper that is playing for us currently. That wouldn't make sense. It is not a deal that we would want to sanction."
Dubravka has been at the club since 2018, serving through the end of the Mike Ashley era, the Saudi-led takeover, and the arrival of Nick Pope who is currently injured. He will turn 36 in January, and his current contract will expire next year.
Some readers in Howe's corner over Dubravka's future. Commenter Don Toon says: “We would be crazy to let Dubs go in January. His performances have been top class and have played a big part in our recent purple patch. I would even go as far to say he should be considered first choice, and Pope should have to win back his place when fit. We need another big dominant performance come Boxing Day to see off the Villains and possibly move up to 5th place! Howe-y the lads!”
Reader JohnHenderson writes: “Keep Dubravka - he is as good, if not better than Pope. Absolutely crazy to sell him right now. HoldTheLine agrees: “Wish we had have started with him at the beginning of the season, especially as we were very hit and miss. Could’ve, should’ve, would’ve been 5/6 better off, maybe he would have been the difference…”
Whistler2 says: “Must admit he’s improved quite a bit as he’s got older. Does a good job and effective with his feet.”
It is time to part ways, according to others. N Shields Lad writes: “I think 36-year-old Dubs will go, but he's been a good servant to the club, remembering his first game against Man Utd. Can't blame him for going, as he's in the twilight of his career and cashing in, which any working person would do. Good luck and best wishes.”
SNEDD says: “He's leaving as he never gets a chance. Pope's had some shockers over the last few seasons and never gets dropped. Best of luck to Dubravka, you will be missed, and be hard to replace.”
