How could the Manchester United starting eleven look when the January transfer window comes to a close?
Manchester United will get a first chance to strengthen Ruben Amorim’s squad when the January transfer window opens for business next week.
The former Sporting CP head coach has endured mixed fortunes during his first six weeks in charge at Old Trafford as the highs of a comprehensive home win against Everton and a dramatic derby victory against Manchester City sit alongside disappointing defeats against the likes of Bournemouth, Nottingham Forest and Tottenham Hotspur.
After dealing with the festive fixtures against Wolverhampton Wanderers and Newcastle United, the Red Devils will focus on what they will hope will be a successful January transfer window. There have been links with several players across Europe and beyond - and there is also the situation surrounding Marcus Rashford’s future at Old Trafford to contend with in the first month of the new year.
But how could the United side look when the January transfer window closes for business.
GK: Andre Onana
The former Ajax and Inter goalkeeper has established himself as United’s number one since joining during the summer of 2023 and seems likely to remain that way after he featured in each and every minutes of Amorim’s first six Premier League games in charge of the Red Devils.
RB: Diogo Dalot
There is a strong argument to suggest Dalot has been United’s most consistent player this season and has performed admirably on both sides of the back four.
LB: David Raum
With ongoing injury concerns over Luke Shaw, a new left-back could well be high on the agenda for the Red Devils and RB Leipzig star Raum has been suggested as one possible target. The 26-times capped Germany international has been hampered by an ankle injury in recent weeks - but returned as a substitute in Leipzig’s 5-1 defeat at Bayern Munich last week.
CB: Lisandro Martinez
The Argentina international could arguably be one of United’s best signings of the last two years and has become a valued member of a defence that has come in for some criticism over that time. Having started all of United’s last three games, it seems Amorim already feels he can trust Martinez as he aims to build at Old Trafford.
CB: Matthijs de Ligt
The Dutch defender has not really lived up to expectations after joining United during the summer months but he will hope to enjoy a much improved run of form under Amorim.
CM: Kobbie Mainoo
Mainoo’s development from promising academy player to integral member of the United squad has been one of the most positive aspects of life at Old Trafford over the last 12 months and he looks set to play a key role under Amorim.

CM: Manuel Ugarte
The summer signing has made 20 appearances in all competitions since joining United from Paris Saint-Germain in August. It would be safe to say he has not quite hit his stride at Old Trafford and will be hoping for an upturn in fortunes over the coming weeks and months.
AMC: Bruno Fernandes
The United captain has already spoken of his desire to help Amorim guide United to success and described his new head coach as ‘a really smart’ manager in the aftermath of his appointment.
RW: Alejandro Garnacho
Garnacho has impressed so far this season with eight goals and four assists in 26 appearances in all competitions and will hope to further establish himself as a key player under Amorim.
LW: Kenan Yildiz
The 17-times capped Turkey international has already proven himself to be one of the most exciting prospects in Italian football after impressing with Juventus. At the age of 19, Yildiz has already made over 50 appearances for the Serie A giants and has firmly established himself as a key part of their setup this season.
ST: Viktor Gyokeres
There have been widespread links with the Sweden striker as Amorim has reportedly targeted a quickfire reunion with his former striker. There is said to be a lot of interest in Gyokeres, who has already plundered his way to 27 goals in just 26 appearances in all competitions for Sporting. CP during the first half of the season.
