Chido Obi-Martin gives major U-turn hint after Arsenal to Man United transfer

Former Arsenal academy striker Chido Obi-Martin was wearing an old England under-16s kit during a training session over the Christmas break despite currently representing Denmark.

Obi-Martin, 17, made two appearances for England's Young Lions in a UEFA development tournament in Cyprus last March. He came on as a second-half substitute in matches against Scotland and the host nation, each ending in a 3-0 victory for England.

The then 16-year-old wore the number 23 shirt during these games and donned a nameless England shirt with the same number on Christmas Eve. Following the morning top-up conditioning session, he posed for a photo with coaches Garry Richards, Kudus Oyenuga, and West Ham United under-18s player Chukwumeka Obi.

The kit choice is particularly noteworthy as Obi-Martin has played for Denmark since April 2023, earning 26 caps across their under-16s, under-17s and under-18s teams. He has 29 caps in total, playing for their under-16s twice in October 2022 before turning out for England's team.

Obi-Martin had the opportunity to play once more for the Young Lions at the youth tournament in Cyprus, but he did not feature in the third game against Denmark. Born in Glostrup, a suburb of Copenhagen, Obi-Marin has a Danish mother and a Nigerian father, making him eligible to represent Nigeria internationally, too.

The young striker only has to decide on one when he plays competitive matches for a senior national team. However, in a chat with the online Danish newspaper Bold in March, he expressed his desire to play for them.

Chido-Obi said, in quotes translated from Danish to English, "I was born in Denmark, and I have better friends in Denmark. I'm just really happy to play for Denmark.

"In Denmark, I have better teammates. It's easier to speak the language because I've lived in Denmark longer, so it just makes more sense."
