Tim Sherwood has urged Arsenal to sign a Premier League talent to replace the injured Bukayo Saka. The Englishman had an impressive start to the season but suffered a hamstring injury during the Gunners’ recent victory over Crystal Palace.
Mikel Arteta’s men cruised to a dominant 5-1 win against the Eagles at Selhurst Park on Saturday. Gabriel Jesus netted twice, while Kai Havertz, Gabriel Martinelli, and Declan Rice also found the back of the net. The major concern, however, was Saka limping off in the first half, with Arteta now confirming that he is set to face an extended spell on the sidelines.
On the Kelly and Wrighty Show, Arsenal legend Ian Wright emphasized that his former club must explore the transfer market to strengthen their attacking depth.
“I think they have to do something about the right wing in terms of finding a replacement down the right wing,” Wright said.
Sherwood suggested the Gunners should consider signing AFC Bournemouth's Antoine Semenyo.
“I’ve gone one for them straight away from the top of my head, Semenyo,” Sherwood added (via TBR Football)
The Ghana international has been in fine form this campaign, scoring five goals and providing one assist in 16 Premier League games. He was also a standout performer for Bournemouth last season, where he netted eight goals in 33 league games. Semenyo’s versatility which allows him to play across the front line would certainly bolster Arsenal in their pursuit of the Premier League title.
However, if the Gunners decide to target the Bournemouth winger, they could face competition from title rivals Liverpool. The Reds have reportedly been monitoring Semenyo, especially with Mohamed Salah’s future uncertain.
The Gunners, meanwhile, have not only lost Bukayo Saka, but also Raheem Sterling, who joined on loan in the summer. Arteta has confirmed that both players will be sidelined for several weeks, with Sterling nursing a knee injury.
Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta says Bukayo Saka’s injury is a major setback
Bukayo Saka has unquestionably been Arsenal’s best player this season. The English winger has contributed five goals and 10 assists in 16 league games. His absence is a significant blow, especially as they don’t have a direct replacement.
Arteta acknowledged that losing their talisman presents a challenge, but expressed confidence in the team’s ability to adapt. He also noted that overcoming obstacles has been a recurring theme for Arsenal this season.
"It’s not looking good. He’s going to be out for many weeks. It’s a huge one. Obviously, he’s a big player for us. You just have to see the impact that he has on the team, but it’s going to be a really good exercise for all of us to think about ways to overcome another challenge, because we’ve already had a lot in the season," he said (via Arsenal website).
The Gunners' festive fixtures kick off with a clash against Ipswich Town at home on Friday, December 27. It is followed by a New Year’s Day encounter with Brentford on their travels.
