Fabio Capello has highlighted Inter Milan’s strength in depth as the main reason they remain the leading Scudetto contenders.
During his recent interview with Gazzetta dello Sport via FCInterNews, Capello offered his view of Inter’s performance against Como.
After a 6-0 rout of Lazio, Simone Inzaghi’s side stuttered against the newly promoted Serie A outfit.
Indeed, they couldn’t find a breakthrough in the opening 45 minutes, attempting just one shot on target before halftime.
However, Carlos Augusto’s opener in the 48th minute dampened Como’s spirits, setting the tone for another multi-goal margin win.
Marcus Thuram doubled Inter’s advantage in second-half stoppages, increasing his league tally for the season to 12 goals.
On the other hand, Lautaro Martinez had another frustrating game.
El Toro failed to live up to the billing again. Indeed, it was his fourth successive scoring blank in Serie A.
Fabio Capello Backs Inter Milan to Defend Scudetto
Martinez’s subpar performances have been one of the major talking points in Italian football this season.
But Thuram has stepped up to the plate, making up for the Argentine’s wasteful form.
He was superb against Como even before the goal.
Yet, the rest of the team, excluding Carlos Augusto, struggled to match Thuram’s energy and impact.
“They weren’t as brilliant or aggressive as in previous games, but in the end, the win was deserved,” Capello said.
“Even though Lautaro continues to struggle with scoring, Inzaghi is still in the running for the title.”
Inter emerged victorious from their last home game of 2024.
They’ll look to do the same on the road when they renew hostilities with relegation-threatened Cagliari on Saturday.
With three points separating them from pacesetters Atalanta, Inzaghi’s men have little margin for error.
However, they’ve defeated the Islanders across their last four away league meetings.
