It’s no secret Arsenal are in need of attacking reinforcements next month as they aim to catch Liverpool in the Premier League title race. It’s now been reported one long-term target at Newcastle could potentially be available.

Today is the first time in two years the Gunners aren’t top of the Premier League table on Christmas Day. Arsenal currently sit six points behind league leaders Liverpool, having played a game more and star player Bukayo Saka now expected to be out of action for around two months.

Mikel Arteta’s side need a Christmas miracle in the second half of the campaign and could Newcastle striker Alexander Isak be the man to provide it?

According to Dean Jones, speaking on the Ranks FC Podcast, a move in January for the Swedish international isn’t necessarily off the cards.

Dean Jones speaking on Alexander Isak: “One we’ve just spoken about, Marcus Rashford, I think he comes into the equation now, and the other one is Alexander Isak. And I think, I give the nod to Alexander Isak. I think Alex Isak, this is the time to go for him.

“It is, he should not be gettable. He shouldn’t be, but I’m told he is. I’m told that like Newcastle are just not settled right now.

“There is a vulnerability about that squad, whereby a few of their top players might be gettable when they shouldn’t be. And this guy is one of them, should have signed a new contract by now, hasn’t. Alex Isak earns somewhere around 100 grand a week.

“I’m not even sure it’s as high as 100 grand a week from what some people tell me. Marcus Rashford, meanwhile, earns three times that amount, and inconsistent to say the least. I would trust Isak in this Arsenal system way more.”

Mikel Arteta is a huge fan of the Newcastle striker and it’s been well reported Isak is the Gunners’ first choice attacking target ahead of the summer. However if what Jones says is true, and he could be available in January, then it could be the huge boost Arsenal need to keep their title charge alive.

Mikel Arteta recently said Arsenal will strengthen in the January window if the right opportunity arises: “The window gives us an opportunity to strengthen the team if we feel that is needed and we feel that we have the capacity to do that as well.

“We are on it and just have to assess the situation because it is changing every week. At the moment not for the better, but I’m positive that in a few weeks we’re going to be in a better place.”
