Robert Lewandowski has been banging in goals all season. Until suddenly, he stopped. The Polish striker is still the top scorer of La Liga and the UEFA [Champions League](https://www.sbnation.com/champions-league), but you wouldn’t have ever guessed that from his last two matches.
In losses against Atlético de Madrid and CD Leganés, Lewandowski was unable to score despite having been presented with many good chances.
According to SofaScore, Lewandowski’s xG was 2.49 across the two games. That means that an average striker would’ve likely scored two or three goals from the chances he had. Lewandowski scored zero.
This would be easier to accept if his overall game was better. But truthfully his last few performances have been lacking, and not just in the goals department.
Maybe this is a temporary problem for [FC Barcelona](https://www.barcablaugranes.com). Everyone can have a run of a few bad matches. Despite the recent bad form, Lewandowski is still overperforming xG in the Champions League and only slightly underperforming in La Liga.
However, his advanced age surely is causing consternation. He’s 36, and sooner or later even the most brilliant footballers decline after hitting their mid-30s.
Barcelona must be hoping that he recovers in the winter break and finds his best form after. They don’t have a lot of depth beyond him. Ferran Torres has been his backup this season, and he’s not the most reliable either. Not only that, but the team ends up lacking wingers if Torres plays striker. Fermín López was utilized as a winger against Atlético, for example.
It’s unlikely that Barcelona will find another striker in the winter transfer market, so for this season, it’s probably Lewandowski or bust.
