Ben Foster and Dave Watson have slammed Jordan Pickford for his tackle on Malo Gusto in the Everton draw against Chelsea.

The Toffees secured a hard-fought point against Enzo Maresca’s side on Sunday (22 December) but things could have been so much different.

The England international keeper could have been sent off in the first half for a reckless challenge on the Blues’ right back which didn’t go down well with Foster on the Football Fill-In (24 December).

He said: “Anywhere else on the pitch, anyone who’s not a goalkeeper, it’s the straightest of straight reds. Get off, see you later, don’t come back.”

Watson agreed with the former West Brom keeper, adding: “I’m so glad he didn’t get injured because it reminded me of the Van Dijk tackle, they’re not to see. It was so bad. I think he’s been very fortunate.”

The 30-year-old put in a positive performance against the Blues at Goodison which helped to keep Sean Dyche’s side in the game.

There were chances for Jack Harrison, Iliman Ndiaye and Orel Mangala but the Toffees weren’t able to capitalise to take the game away from the away side.

This meant that Pickford had a telling impact on the result, making four saves which kept the likes of Pedro Neto and Niclas Jackson out.

As positive as this showing was, Chelsea were aggrieved that the former Sunderland man wasn’t sent off and never gave a penalty away.

The Englishman’s challenge was certainly reckless and didn’t get a touch on the ball which makes it all the more bizarre why VAR didn’t award a spot kick.

The Toffees and Dyche won’t worry about that and will be happy to move on and look forward to a clash against Manchester City on Boxing Day.
