According to reports in Italy, Arsenal have sent scouts to monitor an Atalanta star ahead of a potential transfer, as the Gunners continue to look for a solution to their goal-scoring woes.

Maurizio Russo, of CalcioMercato, has reported that Arsenal sent scouts to observe striker Mateo Retegui as his Atalanta side thrashed Swiss outfit Young Boys 6-1 away from home in the UEFA Champions League League Phase at the end of November.

The 25-year-old impressed on the night by netting two goals in the emphatic win, although it was Belgian winger Charles De Ketelaere who scooped the Man of the Match award for his two goals and three assists – a performance of the tallest order.

The win against Young Boys is not the first time that Retegui has impressed, with his 12 goals in the Serie A so far this season making him the joint-leading goal-scorer in the division, alongside Inter’s Marcus Thuram – with both players also level for assists with three.

Russo reported on X (formerly Twitter) that Arsenal are not the only side tracking Retegui, with French giants Paris Saint-Germain also reserving interest in the Italian international – although the Parisien club are also thought to be monitoring Thuram, who played in France until 2019, when he was 21 years old.

Regardless of the rumoured interest in Retegui, not everyone seems keen on the idea and one fan made their thoughts clear on the potential deal on X, saying: “Italians have rarely succeeded in the Premier League, they are not even good enough especially outside Italy.”

Despite only joining Atalanta in the summer, in a reported £23m (€28m) deal from fellow Serie A side Genoa, it is thought that the Argentine-born striker could be available for a fee in the region of £37m (€45m), if Arsenal do decide to pursue a transfer for Retegui in January.
