Manchester United prioritise €70m-rated Ligue 1 full-back to replace Shaw, player pleased with…

Manchester United have reportedly identified Paris Saint-Germain left-back Nuno Mendes as the priority target to replace Luke Shaw next year.

According to a report by Caught Offside, Nuno Mendes is the subject of interest from Manchester United. The Paris Saint-Germain full-back is the top target for the Premier League heavyweights to replace the injury-riddled Luke Shaw. Meanwhile, the Ligue 1 champions want around €70 million to part ways with the Portuguese international next year.

The Nuno Mendes story

Nuno Mendes has established himself as one of the best young full-backs in the world in the last few years. A native of Lisbon, he spent his formative years in Portugal and graduated from the youth division at Sporting CP. However, the youngster has seen his stock soar during his spell with Paris Saint-Germain, even though he rose in prominence during his stint with Sporting CP.

PSG initially signed Mendes on loan from Sporting CP in August 2021 before completing a permanent move in the subsequent summer transfer window in 2022. Despite some fitness issues, the 22-year-old has come leaps and bounds at the Ligue 1 club, turning out nearly 100 times thus far while chipping in with five goals and 13 assists.

However, the Ligue 1 champions are in a spot of bother over Mendes’s long-term future, as he will enter the final 18 months of his contract in a few days. The situation has not gone unnoticed, capturing the attention of several high-profile clubs across Europe, including Manchester United.

Will Manchester United sign Mendes?

Manchester United’s interest in Nuno Mendes is understandable. The Red Devils are scouring the market for a new left wing-back amid the never-ending fitness issues of Luke Shaw. While the English international is a top-class footballer, his injury woes have blighted his career.

So, Ruben Amorim is desperate for a new left wing-back, with Mendes emerging as the priority target to replace Luke Shaw. In addition, Manchester United’s interest has pleased the young PSG full-back, although the Ligue 1 champions will demand a premium to part ways with him.

PSG will look to recoup €70 million from Mendes’s sale next year. The Ligue 1 club’s price tag might bother Manchester United amid their struggles on the PSR front. So, it will be interesting to see if the 22-year-old Portuguese international lands at Old Trafford.
