How Manchester United should line up vs Wolves in Premier League fixture

United play Wolves on Boxing Day.

Manchester United must bounce back against Wolves in the Premier League on Boxing Day.

United were hammered 3-0 by Bournemouth at Old Trafford last weekend, a bad result that provided a reality check to Ruben Amorim after beating Manchester City in the derby.

Fans were brought back down to earth after defeats to Tottenham and Bournemouth in the space of four days and United must return to winning ways against Wolves.

Wolves are among the favourites to be relegated this season but recently sacked Gary O'Neil and VĂtor Pereira won his first game in charge 3-0 against Leicester City on Sunday.

Regarding the team news, Luke Shaw, Mason Mount and Victor Lindelof are still sidelined, but Matthijs de Ligt is expected to return to the squad after suffering from a bout of sickness.

Here is how our writers think United should start...

Samuel Luckhurst

There is a four-day gap between games and Amorim has got to reduce the rotation that is damaging United. If De Ligt is fit, then he should come back in and Lisandro Martinez needs a game on the bench

Amad has to go back to the wing as United cannot continue with two full backs to service the striker. Diogo Dalot needs a breather and Noussair Mazraoui would provide balance on the opposite flank.

United need to freshen up the front three and have a 20-year-old in Alejandro Garnacho and a 21-year-old Rasmus Hojlund. Both need to have their shooting boots on.

I would bring Yoro in for Mazraoui in the back three. That was a tired tackle for the penalty he conceded against Bournemouth and United might need Yoro's pace in the back line against Wolves.

It feels like something has to change at wing-back. They are too cautious at the moment and when Amad plays there it takes him away from the No.10 position. I would try Garnacho on the left and Dalot on the right. Kobbie Mainoo and Manuel Ugarte get another chance in midfield but the former needs to improve.

That means Fernandes and Amad continue in the No.10 roles, but there is a change coming again at striker, with Hojlund in for Zirkzee.

I'd pick a back-three of Maguire, De Ligt and Martinez, providing that De Ligt is back in the squad after being unwell last week. Playing two natural full-backs in the wing-back roles doesn't really work and Mazraoui's sloppy challenge against Bournemouth suggested he could do with a rest.

Having said that, Amad should start at right wing-back and Dalot should feature on the opposite side, and I'd probably persist with Mainoo alongside Ugarte in the centre of the pitch.

Garnacho missed a big chance against Bournemouth with a tame shot. His cameo from the bench didn't scream 'Garnacho should start on Boxing Day' but Amorim's options are limited.
