The worrying Manchester City Boxing Day stat that spells bad news for Everton

Festive football is here as Everton face Manchester City this Boxing Day.

Boxing Day is one of the most iconic days in the football calendar as people sit down to enjoy the post-Christmas Day carnage and watch some high-quality Premier League football.

For Everton, it doesn’t get much tougher than facing Man City who, despite a wobble in the last month, are always a force to be reckoned with.

Former Toffees defender John Stones will be returning to Goodison Park and both he and Man City will have reason to be optimistic given their Boxing Day record in recent years.

Man City have one of the best Boxing Day records over the last 10 years

Over the course of the last 10 seasons, no team has been as dominant as Man City.

Pep Guardiola’s men have won the last four league titles in a row and given that the festive period is the time of year that can make or break a season, perfection is required.

Naturally, Everton’s opponents haven’t played on 26 December every year. For example, last season’s meeting between the Blues and Man City took place on 27 December.

But, over the last 10 seasons, Man City have picked up a total of 18 points on Boxing Day fixtures.

Only Liverpool, Chelsea, Arsenal and Tottenham Hotspur have better records than the Citizens on the famous football day. Not a great omen for Everton.

Everton’s past five results against Man City

You have to go all the way back to 2017 to find the last time Everton beat Man City.

Since that 4-0 thumping, Everton have lost all but two of their games against their north west counterparts, with one of those losses a 5-0 defeat.

Overall, it doesn’t look much better either. In the previous 197 meetings between the two it’s City who come out on top with 81 wins whereas the Toffees have only won 68 times.

Date Result

10 February 2024 Man City 2-0 Everton

27 December 2023 Everton 1-3 Man City

14 May 2023 Everton 0-3 Man City

31 December 2022 Man City 1-1 Everton

26 February 2022 Everton 0-1 Man City

The other 48 games have ended in draws and given the lack of form shown under Sean Dyche this season, a draw would be something that many fans would take before a ball has even been kicked.
