For the next season, one of the positions that FC Barcelona are looking to strengthen is that of the striker. This season, Robert Lewandowski once again displayed the goalscoring skills that make him one of the most feared strikers in Europe, however, he has slowed down significantly lately.
But while this declining form is not a major concern for the Blaugranes, the Pole’s advancing age still compels them to think about the future, and there is a debate at the Catalan club about bringing a long-term replacement for him.
According to SPORT, Barcelona are planning to hold a meeting with the player after the end of the January transfer window to discuss his future at the Catalan club.
Lewandowski will get an automatic one-year contract extension if he plays at least 60% of the games this season, and the Blaugranes believe he will reach this figure in February. By that time, the Catalans will also get a good idea of the level at which he can perform going forward.
But in addition to the Pole’s own performances, outside factors will influence Barcelona’s decision as well. The Blaugrana board believes the upcoming summer will be a good time to get a replacement for the Polish striker as two of the most prominent strikers in Europe, Erling Haaland and Viktor Gyokeres, will be available in the market.
But for now, both Deco and Flick are clear that Lewandowski’s performance is still excellent, and the former is willing to wait for another year to bring his replacement. However, if his performances continue to decline, the debate about his future will once again be opened.
