Virgil van Dijk succeeded Jordan Henderson as Liverpool captain last summer
Jordan Henderson believes Virgil van Dijk can continue playing at the highest level for many more years - as he believes securing the defender's services should be a 'top' priority for Liverpool. The Reds skipper, who is out of contract in the summer, has been in sensational form for Arne Slot's side so far this season.
Van Dijk is one of three players who are coming to the end of their contracts next summer. Trent Alexander-Arnold and Mohamed Salah are two who also have uncertain futures at Anfield.
While rumours continue to circulate over their futures, Henderson believes offering the Dutch defender a new long-term deal would be great business from the club. Asked by Amazon Prime Video where he places Liverpool securing the services of Van Dijk in terms of priorities, Henderson replied: "Top."
Before he added: "I feel like Virgil could play until 39, 40 if he wanted to.
"So, for me if they give him a contract for two, three, four years it would be a pretty good bit of business for the club."
As things stand, the Dutchman will be allowed to speak to clubs outside of England from January 1. However, speaking following his side's 6-3 win over Tottenham Hotspur just before Christmas, Van Dijk revealed he is placing no deadline on when a new contract can be agreed at Anfield as his impasse rumbles on.
He said: "There is no deadline at all. We will see what the future brings. Is there an update? No."
