Everton could offer Seamus Coleman a new contract if he proves his longevity even further against Manchester City on Boxing Day.

The Toffees have confirmed club captain Coleman will start in place of 39-year-old Ashley Young at the Etihad Stadium, against an out-of-sorts City side whose title challenge has plummeted in recent weeks, losing nine of their last 12 in all competitions.

It will be just his second Premier League start of the campaign, and a second consecutive appearance having appeared from the bench to see out the clean sheet against Chelsea on 22 December.

Coleman’s injury record this season has severely restricted him but if he can channel some of his ability from the illustrious number of years he has spent at Goodison Park, it could be enough to convince the new ownership that he deserves fresh terms.

Along with the man he is replacing, Young – who is in fact three years his senior – Coleman signed a new one-year deal in the summer.

Of course, the experience and dressing room impact are invaluable but cannot be relied upon forever, and Young especially has shown a revitalised level of performance after a slow start to the season.

Coleman now has his own rekindled opportunity – and the sentimental aspect among us all would relish the chance to see the veteran Irishman get his runout at Bramley-Moore Dock next season having been a Blue since 2009.

The level to which the right-back has justified the minuscule price tag for which a then-David Moyes-inspired Everton signed him all those years ago, means he will always be fondly remembered among the stalwarts of the club’s history.

But a stern performance away at the champions might just have many baying for another extension come the summer.

In other Everton news, Sean Dyche is backed to take on a new role under The Friedkin Group.
