“At This Stage”–Romano Makes January Transfer Claim Amid Fresh Speculation About£62M Rated Chelsea Target

There is little to no chance of Chelsea transfer target Benjamin Sesko leaving RB Leipzig during the January transfer window, according to journalist Fabrizio Romano.

Reports last week suggested that the Blues, Arsenal and Manchester City had sent scouts to watch the Slovenian play against Bayern Munich but Romano says that any transfer will have to wait until the summer:

“There are really many, many clubs keen on Sesko. It could be more than 5 clubs. But it’s not a topic for January, the Sesko case will be open again for the summer and that’s when the real suitors can emerge with concrete talks. At this stage, nothing is advanced with any club yet.”

Romano has already played down the prospect of the Blues signing a striker next month and this claim about Sesko backs up those earlier comments.

Chelsea already know how much it could cost to sign the striker

Although Sesko did commit his future to Leipzig earlier this year when he signed a contract extension, ending speculation about a move to the Premier League, it is believed that a gentleman’s agreement was also made.

Reports in Germany suggest that, if Leipzig receive an offer between €70m (£58m) and €75m (£62m) at the end of this season, the forward will be allowed to leave.

Will Chelsea sign any players in January?

While a new No.9 is not on the agenda, the club could strengthen their options at the other end of the pitch. They are said to be considering approaches for a new centre-back.

Mykhailo Mudryk’s provisional drugs ban means the Blues may also contemplate signing a winger. You can read more in this article about who Enzo Maresca’s side could target in the next transfer window.
