Matthew Upson waxed lyrical about Iliman Ndiaye after he scored for Everton against Manchester City at the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day.

The Toffees appeared to be struggling after the hosts took an early lead through Bernardo Silva on Thursday (26 December), but Ndiaye stepped up with an equaliser that almost came out of nowhere.

Impressed by the 24-year-old Senegal international, Upson hailed the finish as “special” and raved over the technique with which he found the back of the net.

“It is easy to criticise, the defending is a little but statue-esque, I have to say, but take nothing away from this finish. It is a special finish”, Upson said on Amazon Prime (26 December, 1:07 pm).

“How quickly does he take that, Ndiaye. His first touch is absolutely spot on, he doesn’t give Rico Lewis a chance, on that half-volley, the moment it bounces – bang!

“With his right foot, absolutely inch-perfect, that’s a heck of a finish, it really is. Top class from Ndiaye, really punishes Manchester City there.”

It was evident from kick-off that Sean Dyche’s side were prepared to sit back and hit the hosts on the counter.

However, the plan backfired as Silva’s shot deflected off Jarrad Branthwaite and went straight into the back of the net, leaving Jordan Pickford helpless.

Although the Toffees struggled to test Stefan Ortega in City’s goal, Silva missing a chance to double the lead allowed the visitors back into the game.

36 minutes had passed on the clock when Ndiaye pulled Everton level with what was an excellent finish.

The former Sheffield United man was spotted training on Christmas Day when most of his other teammates were celebrating with their families.

The effort has paid off for the attacker as he netted his third Premier League goal of the season.

It remains to be seen if he can now fire the Merseyside-based club to a victory over Pep Guardiola’s side.

Manchester City are there for the taking after losing their last three games in all competitions.
