Tino Livramento's Newcastle United absence explained as Kieran Trippier returns

Newcastle United handed [Kieran Trippier](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/kieran-trippier) his first start since October in the Magpies' clash against Aston Villa.

Trippier comes in from the cold to replace Tino Livramento with the England international missing out through illness. The former Chelsea youngster's issue is not understood to be lengthy but it offers Trippier the chance to stake his claim and impress [Eddie Howe](https://www.chroniclelive.co.uk/all-about/eddie-howe).

Trippier has started just three Premier League matches before today and gets his opportunity in what has been an injury ravaged season for the star. Trippier pulled his hamstring at Everton during the 0-0 draw.

Despite the return of experienced defender Trippier, Bruno Guimaraes continued with the armband as team skipper. The other change from the side that won 4-0 at Ipswich on Saturday was a Joelinton return from suspension with the Brazilian replacing Joe Willock.

Interestingly, Howe had said in the build-up to the game: "I have no doubt that he could easily get back into the team and have a long run in the team. That's how good he is, so I don't see it quite like the question.

"He's a very rare full-back, there are not many like him who can assist and create in the way that he does with both crosses and with long-range passing, so he's incredibly respected by us and wanted by us."

Aston Villa are unchanged from the side that beat Man City 2-1, with Jhon Duran staying up front with Ollie Watkins only among the substitutes.
