Aston Villa will be without Jhon Duran for at least three games after the forward was sent off for kicking out at Newcastle defender Fabian Schar on Thursday.

The 21-year-old Colombia international was shown a straight red card by referee Anthony Taylor in the 32nd minute of the contest at St James' Park after letting his frustration boil over. Magpies defender Schar had snuffed out a Villa counter-attack, though Duran collided with the defender and caught him with his left boot high up his back.

In line with Premier League rules, Duran will be suspended for at least three games as he was dismissed for violent conduct, meaning he will miss the upcoming Premier League games against Brighton and Leicester City, as well as next month's FA Cup tie against West Ham.

However, the suspension headache doesn't stop there for manager Unai Emery after Matty Cash picked up his fifth booking of the season at St James' Park.

The 27-year-old right-back was booked in the 14th minute of the Boxing Day fixture for a foul on Anthony Gordon.

Premier League rules state that players who receive five bookings in the first half of the season will serve an automatic one-game suspension.

But the threshold for an automatic ban increases from New Year's Day onwards, with any player ill-disciplined enough to receive 10 bookings before gameweek 32 set for a two-match ban. Villa trialled Newcastle 1-0 at half-time on Thursday after Gordon's opening goal.
