Aston Villa striker Jhon Duran was shown a red card for violent conduct following an incident with Newcastle defender Fabian Schar.

The Premier League has revealed that Aston Villa forward Jhon Duran was sent off for violent conduct against Newcastle United.

After the half-hour mark, the Colombian was shown a straight red card by referee Anthony Taylor following an altercation with Magpies defender Fabian Schar. As the pair jostled for the ball in the hosts 18-yard box, they tangled with the Swiss international going to ground before Duran fell over the defender.

Villa's joint-top goalscorer appeared to catch his opponent on the back and leg, leaving the centre-back in a heap. The referee showed no hesitation and brandished a straight red card - much to the anger of Duran.

In a statement released on X, the Premier League Match Centre wrote: "The referee issued a red card to Durán for violent conduct. The VAR checked and confirmed the referee’s call."

Villa's task of earning a result at St James' Park increased, having already fell a goal behind after 80 seconds through Anthony Gordon, as they were made to chase the deficit a man light.

Michael Brown, who was on Amazon Prime Sports as a co-commentator said: "It's a great tackle, you give him the benefit of the doubt. It's a step over, it's this next one for me that goes towards the back of the head."

Earlier Guy Mowbray said: "Schar gets back there and does Duran catch him? Well (Martin) Dubravka thinks so, we've got a flash point. Jhon Duran, as we saw with that free-kick, he couldn't hide his disappointment... oh, here we go. It's a red card. Duran's face is a picture of astonishment and Newcastle were under the opinion that he didn't need to do this, oh - it's left leg, then right."
