A rather tame and subdued opening was disrupted by a tremendous goal from Cole Palmer, after which it remained a fairly even, if much more energetic contest.
While Fulham edged possession, Chelsea created the better of chances, with Palmer coming close a couple times to doubling his tally and Cucurella’s diving header kept out by an excellent save from Bernd Leno.
At the other end, Robert Sánchez also made an excellent save from a left-sided defender, while Raúl Jiménez pulled a good opportunity wide of the far post.
Chelsea had excellent chances on either side of half-time to double our advantage, including Levi Colwill scoring from an offside position, but that second goal continued to elude us.
Robert Sánchez then took center stage for a couple minutes, first almost giving away a cheap goal, then making another excellent save, this time point blank from Antonee Robinson as Fulham started to really push for an equalizer ... and Chelsea started to run out of steam.
And eventually, Fulham did find their entirely deserved and not unexpected equalizer in the final ten minutes, through an unmarked Harry Wilson after play wasn’t stopped for a head injury to Pedro Neto.
Chelsea did try to mount a response but the one good chance we managed to create, a rare shot by Sancho, was stopped by the goalkeeper.
And at the other end, Fulham’s fresh legs won it on the counter in stoppage time.
Carefree.
* Just one change from the weekend, with Cucurella coming back from his suspension, Disasi dropping out and Gusto going back to the right side
* Just the one substitution from Maresca
