Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola has weighed in on his side's 1-1 Premier League draw against Everton. The Cityzens faced off against the Toffees at the Etihad Stadium on Boxing Day (December 26), with both sides sharing the points.
Bernardo Silva opened the scoring in the 14th minute as his effort deflected kindly beyond goalkeeper Jordan Pickford. Iliman Ndiaye netted the equalizer, also in the first half (36'), as he found the top corner of the goal. After this, neither side was able to find the net, with Erling Haaland missing a penalty (53').
Speaking to the press after the game, Pep Guardiola said (via CityXtra on X):
"If you ask me about the performance today, we did what we've done. When we play bad, I say in the press conference and say they were better, we were not good enough. But today was not the case against a top team, one of the best in clean sheets, the chances we had and not just the penalty, a lot.
"But football is about winning, football is about scoring goals and not conceding and always we have done it. And this season or this last month, month and a half, we are not able to do it."
Manchester City are struggling to return to a good run of form, as they have been unable to find wins. They have won just one of their last nine Premier League games, and results have yet to improve as 2024 nears its end.
Manchester City defender speaks after 1-1 Everton draw
Manchester City defender Manuel Akanji has spoken about the Cityzens' 1-1 draw against Everton. There was a point in the 83rd minute when a counter-attack might have led to the visitors handing City another defeat.
However, Orel Mangala's effort on goal was deflected for a corner by Akanji, who told the press afterwards (via Football 365):
“This was a game today we were able to score three or four goals, but they didn’t go in but then to be honest with you it can’t happen that we nearly lose in the last minute.
"We are trying to attack but I think it was like a six versus two in front of our goal. We still need to believe to the last moment that we can win the match.”
Manuel Akanji has been a consistent player for Manchester City this season, despite their poor run of form. He has played 20 games in all appearances for the Cityzens, providing an assist and picking up just three yellow cards.
