Chelsea icon Frank Lampard delivers fatal blow to Wayne Rooney amid sack worry

Chelsea legend Frank Lampard got one over on footballing rival Wayne Rooney as his Coventry City battered the Manchester United icon's Plymouth Argyle in Championship action. The Sky Blues scored four without reply in the first half with Josh Eccles, Tatsuhiro Sakamoto and Ephron Mason-Clark all on target.

Lampard was selected as the permanent replacement for to Coventry legend Mark Robins with his appointment confirmed in late November. He has since overseen one draw, two defeats and now three victories with last weekend's dismal defeat to Portsmouth last weekend firmly in the rear-view mirror.

As for Rooney, the pressure on his job has increased significantly in recent weeks with the Green Army winless in eight games. Damaging defeats to Bristol City, Norwich and now Coventry have come in the last two months with Plymouth rock bottom of the Championship.

Given it was the fourth time Argyle have lost a game by a margin of three goals or more in the last three months, Rooney's time at Home Park could soon be coming to an end and it could be Lampard that has delivered the final blow.

While Chelsea fans will likely be happy at how their former midfielder is getting on after some tough spells in management recently, an avenue is also open to utilise that contact. The likes of Reece James and Levi Colwill have both been able to develop their game elsewhere before returning to Stamford Bridge. If Lampard can continue his side's good form, it is a real possibility either in the January transfer window or the summer.

"Unfortunately I cannot say that, not about Kiernan, about all the squad, because when the transfer window is open, unfortunately anything can happen. "We don't want one of our players to leave, the problem is that sometimes the question is more for them, that if they say, 'OK, you don't want me to leave, but I'm not happy, I want to play more'.

"So in that case, we are not going to say, 'No, you have to stay, yes or yes'. It's a matter of agreement between the club and the player, the only thing I can say is that we are happy with Kiernan, then we'll see."
