Sam Matterface and Danny Mills disagreed over whether Vitalii Mykolenko should have been sent off after conceding a penalty as Everton drew 1-1 at Manchester City on Thursday.

The Ukraine full-back was already on a yellow card when he upended Savinho early in the second half, with Jordan Pickford saving Erling Haaland’s consequent penalty in a game where Iliman Ndiaye rescued a point at the Etihad Stadium.

Matterface, commentating on the game for talkSPORT (26 December, 1:45 pm) felt referee Simon Hooper should have shown a second yellow but co-commentator Mills disagreed with his assessment.

“No, I don’t think so, I think the penalty is enough. Why is it a booking? It’s a foul. Not every foul has to be a booking,” Mills said.

“He’s mistimed it by a fraction. That’s what it is.”

Everton impressive against Manchester City

The biggest downfall in recent games has been the lack of attacking threat posed by the Toffees but that was slightly improved against the Premier League reigning champions.

Ndiaye’s goal was sublime and arrived as a result of James Tarkowski being willing to move into open spaces further up the pitch, something which hasn’t been seen on far too many occasions.

Everton’s team performance as a whole was an improvement with Seamus Coleman proving he can still contribute in the absence of the suspended Ashley Young.

While there are still areas that need improvement, Sean Dyche will undoubtedly take the positives from the encounter against one of the strongest sides in the world, although the table would tell you otherwise.

City were limited to very few clear-cut chances in the encounter with Jordan Pickford providing the heroics after Erling Haaland’s missed penalty which aside from the goal, was their only real opportunity in the game.

In other Everton news, the Toffees are keen on signing a striker from Ligue 1.
