Manchester United have struggled to find a consistent goal scorer for several years.

The Red Devils signed Romelu Lukaku under Jose Mourinho, but he was never seen as a long-term solution.

They then put their trust in Anthony Martial, but his persistent injury issues prevented him from leading the line.

Now, Rasmus Hojlund has been given the role.

However, he has struggled in his second Premier League season and now placed ‘on trial.’

Joshua Zirkzee remains an uncertainty as well.

Questions have been asked over whether he is a natural number nine.

Signing a top-class striker will be a priority this summer.

Sporting CP’s Viktor Gyokeres has been strongly linked, but he is only one of several options on the table.

Reports in recent days have suggested Harry Kane could leave Bayern Munich.

The Englishman has a €82m release clause available in the summer.

However, United legend Teddy Sheringham believes the club should move on from Kane and focus on younger options.

Speaking to Finaria.it (via The Telegraph), he said: “The problems all started two years ago.

“They didn’t make a bid for Harry Kane, the best available centre forward, the leader of football.

“Ultimately, a professional at the top of his game.

“That’s what Manchester United used to do.

“They’ve set their stall out since then and said, look, we’re not going for top players.

“They weren’t in for Declan Rice, who would have run the midfield. He’s going for 100 million.

“That’s what Man United used to do: they broke the bank and got the top players in.

“So, you’re asking me now, two years later, when it should have been dealt with two years ago.

“Is Harry Kane the right man now? Probably not.

“I know he’s still scoring goals for Bayern Munich.

“But I don’t know if it would have the same impression on everybody if they were to get him now.

“United need to start going for younger guns, but I mean, who’s out there?

“Would Alexander Isak come away from Newcastle to go to Man United at the moment?

“You’d like to think he would, being a Man United fan, but I’m not so sure he would.

“So the further they fall down the pecking order, the less chance they’ve got of signing top players.”

Alexander Isak, 24, has been one of the Premier League’s most consistent goal threats this season, scoring 19 goals in 29 appearances.

The Newcastle star now boasts 48 goals and eight assists in 74 EPL outings.

He was recently hailed as the “best striker around” by his teammate Bruno Guimaraes.
