Dick Advocaat hails Manchester United loanee Tyrell Malacia, sends warning not to 'underestimate' left-back

Tyrell Malacia is back in his familiar surroundings in the Eredivisie after joining PSV Eindhoven on loan for the remainder of the season.

The 25-year-old joined Manchester United in 2022 and made 39 appearances in his first season before a lengthy injury set him back with a prolonged spell in the treatment room.

Tyrell Malacia has made eight appearances under Ruben Amorim, but United’s head coach quickly decided to send him on loan in January.

United signed a new left-wing back in January when Patrick Dorgu arrived from Lecce along with 18-year-old centre-back Ayden Heaven from Arsenal. By adding two defensive recruits to the squad, it shows where Amorim chose to prioritise in January.

With that in mind, it made sense for Malacia to link up with Peter Bosz’s side for the rest of the season.

PSV are currently second in the Eredivisie, with the same amount of points as Ajax, who have played a game less.

Dick Advocaat raves about Tyrell Malacia

Former Sunderland and Netherlands manager Dick Advocaat recalls having Malacia as a player during his two-year spell at Feyenoord.

The current Curacao national team manager believes Malacia will prove to be a smart signing by PSV.

Speaking to Feyenoord Pings, Advocaat said: “I know that he hasn’t played for Manchester United for almost a year and a half, but this boy has a good head. Foppe (de Haan) always says: ‘He has a good head’. But I put it a bit nicer. At Feyenoord I saw that he is made of the right stuff.

“When I was there, it was a bit more difficult financially and we had a lot of young players. But boys like Orkun Kökçü, Lutsharel Geertruida and also Malacia handled that very well. Real professionals who really wanted to make it. They came from the youth team, came into the team and stayed. They did great.

“I am convinced of that; Tyrell is a real winner. As a trainer I didn’t have to say too much to him. In addition, he fits in with PSV, which is a good club for him. Tyrell is good on the ball, can be important in attack at PSV in Bosz’s game. And don’t underestimate his defensive qualities.

“Tyrell may not be that big, but he holds his own. At Feyenoord he always went into battle. He is also really not afraid of anyone. Here in the Netherlands, he can become the player he was again. He knows the competition well and at PSV there are also players he knows from Oranje, that will give him a good feeling.”

Malacia can get back to his best

The Eredivisie is an easier league to play in than the Premier League.

For instance, football in the Netherlands is played at a much slower pace than England. It’s also the league Malacia knows best from his time coming through the ranks at Feyenoord.

This is why it was shrewd business by PSV to sign Malacia on loan.

If Malacia impresses between now and the end of the season, there’s a chance he could make the move permanent in the summer.
