Manchester United’s most dominant period under Sir Alex Ferguson was built on the leadership of Roy Keane.

The Irishman was the driving force behind a side that ruled English football for over a decade.

Keane’s 12-year spell came to a controversial end after a public fallout with Sir Alex Ferguson.

The fallout led to him departing Old Trafford in 2005, joining Celtic shortly after.

Speaking on the latest Sky Sports Stick to Football episode, Keane reflected on his United exit.

The former captain admitted he was emotional on the day he left the club.

“When I left United, I did cry that morning. Cried in my car,” Keane said.

Despite his immense success, he claims he does not support Manchester United or Nottingham Forest.

“I don’t have that affinity with the clubs I’ve played for.

“I don’t support Manchester United.

“And I don’t support Nottingham Forest,” he said on The Overlap.

Keane insists he now views United from a professional standpoint rather than as a fan.

“I have more of an insight with how it works at the club and the expectations.

“But I wouldn’t say that I’m a fan – their results don’t make or break my weekend.

“I wouldn’t go home going, ‘Get in there, that was a great win.’

“I’d be looking at it in a professional way.”

Regardless of his stance, his legacy at Old Trafford remains untouchable.

His leadership and winning mentality made him one of the greatest captains in United’s history.

Ruben Amorim’s side could certainly benefit from a midfielder of Keane’s calibre today.

United’s midfield has often looked too lightweight and lacking true leadership this season.

Ironically, they face Keane’s boyhood club Tottenham Hotspur on Sunday.

United will be out for revenge after losing to Spurs twice already this campaign.
