Joshua Zirkzee's good friend previously linked with Premier League move now claims he 'always watches United'

Even though the glory days are gone, Manchester United still attracts more attention than any other football club in the world.

Manchester United remains an appealing destination for footballers across the world.

Ruben Amorim was made United head coach in November after Erik ten Hag’s dismissal and the club has been linked with many players since then.

Some targets have previously played under Amorim – such as Viktor Gyokeres and Geovany Quenda – and he signed two new players in January, including Patrick Dorgu and Ayden Heaven.

United may be 13th in the Premier League and competing in the Europa League, but it’s still considered one of the top clubs in the world, as proven by one of Liverpool’s transfer targets.

Sam Beukema regularly watches Manchester United

Bologna defender Sam Beukema has been linked with a move to Liverpool in recent months, yet the Dutchman had no problem revealing that he regularly watches Manchester United matches.

The Dutch defender has impressed in Serie A following a transfer from AZ Alkmaar in 2023. This season, he has made 22 appearances in the league and also played six times in the Champions League.

Speaking to Gazetta dello Sport, Beukema spoke about his former team-mate Joshua Zirkzee, as they remain in regular contact.

“Josh and I are always in touch, even this morning. We don’t just talk about football, but about life. I always watch Manchester United.”

Beukema added: “We have a chat with him and Ndoye and others, there’s a really strong friendship between all of us. There was a chemistry between us, which still exists today, huge, unique.”

It is understood that Arne Slot made attempts to sign Beukema at Feyenoord, and he could try again at Liverpool if he can excuse the defender’s fascination with United.

This admission might not go down too well with Liverpool supporters.

Joshua Zirkzee stats since joining Manchester United

A lot has been written about Zirkzee since his summer move from Bologna.

The Reds paid £36.5 million for Zirkzee and handed the Netherlands international a five-year contract.

However, Zirkzee has struggled for large spells in his first season in England.

Zirkzee has enjoyed a better form in recent times, though, including the winning penalty in an FA Cup victory over Arsenal – as well as his equaliser in the fifth-round triumph over Leicester City.

It’s already clear that he isn’t a typical No. 9 or No. 10, but Zirkzee’s link-up play is second to none at times and fans are eager to see him become a success.

The former Bayern Munich striker needs to push himself for the remainder of the season to hit double figures for goals.
