Manchester United icon Wayne Rooney and Steven Gerrard battle it out for new job

Manchester United legend Wayne Rooney and his former England teammate Steven Gerrard are reportedly head-to-head to become the next Rangers manager.

The current boss of the Glaswegian giants - Philippe Clement - is under increased scrutiny after being knocked out of the Scottish Cup by Queen's Park at Ibrox on Sunday. Hopes of silverware in the league are fading fast with arch rivals Celtic 13 points ahead of them in the table.

Rangers are still competing in the Europa League but, with the likes of United, Tottenham Hotspur, Lazio and Lyon remaining in the competition, too, their chances of European glory appear slim. If the Rangers hierarchy choose to sack Clement, it would reportedly cost them £1.2million to do so which, potentially, rules out any hope of swooping a manager from an existing club.

According to Betfair, out-of-work managers are currently leading the way to replace Clement. Gerrard is the current favourite at 2/1 having previously won the Scottish Premiership with Rangers during a successful stint between 2018 and 2021.

Rooney, who is currently searching for his next role having been sacked by Championship side Plymouth Argyle on New Year's Eve, is priced up at 5/1 with Russell Martin (3/1) and Sean Dyche (4/1) among the contenders. The former United man's next career move has been uncertain since losing his job in Devon.

The former striker has been doing punditry work since leaving Home Park alongside Gary Neville, Roy Keane, Jill Scott, Ian Wright and Jamie Carragher on the ever-popular Stick to Football podcast. He also made his debut on Amazon Prime this week as a pundit during Manchester City's Champions League defeat to Real Madrid.
