Martinez suffered a torn MCL last year which saw him miss two months of action. That injury did not require surgery.
Martinez injury problems
Prior to this injury, Martinez had already missed 49 matches during his Manchester United career due to various injuries.
This season had been injury free up until the injury against Palace, and his excellent form in January made this a crushing below.
Prior to surgery this week, Martinez hit back at club legend Paul Scholes, who had suggested he was not good enough for Manchester United.
Manchester United have played one game without Martinez since his injury, a 2-1 FA Cup fourth round win over Leicester City.
The Red Devils are now preparing for a first Premier League match without the Argentine available this season, away at Tottenham Hotspur.
