Man City icon reveals Manchester United transfer interest as Sir Alex Ferguson theory raised

Vincent Kompany chats to the media.

Bayern Munich manager and ex-Man City captain Vincent Kompany claims he could have signed for Manchester United.

Ex-Manchester City captain Vincent Kompany has revealed that he could have, potentially, signed for rivals Manchester United instead during his playing days.

The Bayern Munich manager made 360 appearances for City as a player, having joined from Hamburger CV in August 2008. Kompany won 10 major trophies at the Etihad Stadium, including four Premier League titles, four League Cups and two FA Cup medals.

He returned to his boyhood club - RSC Anderlecht in Belgium - on a free transfer from City in 2019 before retiring from professional football as a player in August 2020. The former centre-back went on to manage Anderlecht and Burnley, helping the latter earn promotion to the Premier League, before their relegation to the EFL Championship last season.

And Kompany, currently in the dugout for Bundesliga giants Bayern, has opened up on how he could have joined the red side of Manchester. Before Bayern's 2-1 win at Celtic on Wednesday night, Kompany stated that legendary United boss Sir Alex Ferguson watched a game he played at Celtic Park in 2008.

"It's not a nostalgic return," he said at his pre-match press conference on Tuesday. "I'm coming back as a coach, not a player.

"I don't want to bring in too much nostalgia, but it was great. I remember Sir Alex Ferguson was there to watch me. If I'd played well, maybe he would've made an offer for me."

Kompany's Bayern are currently eight points clear of second-placed Bayer Leverkusen in the Bundesliga table. Both teams will face each other on Saturday evening (5.30pm).

The 38-year-old succeeded England manager Thomas Tuchel at the Allianz Arena - last summer - with Bayern losing just one league game under him so far.
