Manchester United 'approach' car manufacturer over sponsorship deal ahead of lucrative tour

Man Utd are looking at ways to address their tight financial situation ahead of a lucrative trip to Malaysia.

Manchester United have reportedly approached Malaysian car manufacturer Perodua over a potential sponsorship deal.

United are planning a lucrative post-season tour to Malaysia as they look to raise funds and help them comply with the Premier League’s profit and sustainability regulations, as well as UEFA’s Financial Fair Play regulations.

It has already been suggested the trip to Malaysia could earn the club as much as £7.96 million, a figure that could be further boosted by sponsorship deals and commercial agreements. United will play their final competitive match of the season when they host Aston Villa on 25 May. The FA Cup final takes place a week earlier on 17 May and the Europa League final is on 21 May.

Perodua 'will consider' sponsorship deal

It is not yet known what sponsorship deals might be available on the post-season tour of Malaysia, but car manufacturer Perodua claim they have been approached over a potential shirt sponsorship opportunity.

Speaking at the recent launch of the fifth edition of the National Amateur Golf Series (PNAGS), chairman Tan Sri Asmat Kamaludin revealed an approach from United had been received, but they would fully consider their options and how it would impact customers before making any final decision.

“Recently, I don’t know if I should say this… but I received a letter from former European champions Manchester United asking if they could feature the Perodua logo on one of their shirts and whether we could sponsor them," he said.

“I don’t usually say this in public, but I’m an Arsenal supporter. If I did that, it wouldn’t be fair to my Arsenal team,” he joked. “But that’s just an example of people reaching out for our support (in terms of sponsorship) in football. If people ask for support, we will consider, especially for Malaysian sports. But we have to be selective. For example, in the M-League, I'm from Johor. If I support Johor Darul Ta'zim, I might lose support from customers in Selangor or Kelantan. So, we have to be very careful about who we support and sponsor."
