'All of a sudden': Emmanuel Petit says he has seen a player at Tottenham who reminds him of Mason Mount

A number of players have underperformed at Tottenham Hotspur this season.

Ange Postecoglou’s side are currently 14th in the Premier League table after winning just eight of their first 24 games. That is a shocking return.

Injuries have played a huge part in their problems this term, but it has to be said that some of their senior stars have not delivered.

Emmanuel Petit has had his say on one such player at Tottenham.

Emmanuel Petit compares James Maddison to Mason Mount

James Maddison has had a really poor season at Tottenham.

The England international, on his day, is one of the best players in the Premier League. He is capable of producing magic moments when he has the ball at his feet and can decide games on his own.

However, Postecoglou has trusted Dejan Kulusevski in the number 10 role much more than Maddison, with the Englishman starting just 19 games in all competitions this season.

Roy Keane criticised Maddison for his performances recently, and Petit has now had his say on the attacking midfielder too.

The Arsenal icon has claimed that Maddison reminds him of Manchester United’s Mason Mount – a great talent who ‘disappears’ when things get difficult.

Petit said about the Tottenham number 10 on talkSPORT: “He reminds me sometimes of Mason Mount. Those guys were magnificent, (Maddison) with Leicester. I think they were great to watch, great talents.

“But, when trouble comes, all of a sudden, we have so many players that disappears like this.

“Why? Is it because they disagree with the tactics? Finding excuses because there are so many players injured? Or maybe because they don’t have the strength mentally to cope with those problems.”

Darren Bent bursts out laughing after Petit mocks Tottenham

Tottenham weren’t the only club Petit talked about during his appearance on talkSPORT, he spoke about his old club Arsenal as well.

While discussing the title race, the Frenchman claimed that Liverpool have not been great recently.

Andy Goldstein pointed out how the Reds battered Spurs 4-0, but Petit was having none of that – he mocked Tottenham by saying everyone has smashed them this season.

Here’s how their conversation went:

Petit: “The last few games, they were not that good for Liverpool.”

Goldstein: “They smashed Spurs though last week, didn’t they?”

Petit: “Well, who didn’t smash Spurs this season?”

Darren Bent burst out laughing

Petit: “You’re laughing, I don’t want to be harsh on Spurs, but this is the reality. I’m not a dreamer, I’m just looking at the facts.”
