Man Utd now prefer to sign £40m striker instead of Gyokeres - The Athletic

Manchester United could pursue a deal for Ipswich Town striker Liam Delap if the Tractor Boys are relegated from the Premier League this season, according to The Athletic.

The Red Devils have misfired in front of goal this campaign, and they have netted just 29 times after 24 games in the top-flight.

The club are likely to invest in a new striker with Rasmus Hojlund and Joshua Zirkzee failing to impress. Gyokeres has been linked, but he is unlikely to be an option due to his age and high price tag.

The Red Devils prefer to land a younger striker than the Swede, who will turn 27 soon. Gyokeres also favours a move to a Champions League club this summer.

The Athletic claim that Delap is an option. Ipswich could demand a premium fee if they stay in the top-flight, but the price could be much less if they are relegated.

The second scenario would suit the Red Devils, but a deal won’t be easy to pull off. Man City have a £40 million buyback clause and could act as a stumbling block in United’s pursuit.

United unlikely to land Delap due to City clause

Delap joined the Tractor Boys from City for £20m last summer after an underwhelming loan spell with Hull City in the Championship.

However, he has exceeded expectations with nine goals from 23 league games. His displays have attracted suitors, considering Ipswich don’t create many chances on goal.

Chelsea are also interested in his services alongside United, but we don’t see either club landing his signature as City have a big advantage with the reported buyback fee.

City will have some regrets over losing Cole Palmer to Chelsea two years ago, and they are unlikely to hand a free run to the Blues or United to purchase Delap in the summer.

In our view, the Red Devils are facing a losing battle in the striker’s pursuit. Pep Guardiola’s side are most likely to re-sign the marksman if Ipswich are relegated.

If they were to consider his sale in the same window, it could be to a club overseas rather than strengthening Chelsea or United ahead of the 2025/26 season.
