Manchester United’s goal-scoring woes have been laid bare this season, with the Red Devils finding the back of the net a mere 28 times in 24 Premier League matches. This dire situation has reignited speculation about potential reinforcements, with Harry Kane once again at the centre of transfer rumours.
The England captain, who made a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in 2023, is now being linked with a sensational return to the Premier League. United, along with Arsenal, Chelsea, and surprisingly, his former club Tottenham Hotspur, are all reportedly keen on securing his services.
Sir Jim Ratcliffe, the new co-owner of Manchester United, is said to be particularly interested in rekindling the club’s long-standing pursuit of Kane. The striker’s release clause, set to drop to £54 million in June, has only fuelled the fire of speculation. For Ratcliffe and the United hierarchy, Kane represents a “dream target” – a proven Premier League goalscorer who could potentially solve the club’s attacking predicament.
United’s interest in Kane is understandable given their current striking options. Joshua Zirkzee, brought in with high expectations, has failed to make the desired impact. As one source put it, “Joshua Zirkzee has failed to live up to expectations, making the addition of an established goalscorer even more necessary.”
However, United’s pursuit of Kane is not without competition. The club is also reportedly eyeing other striking options. A deal is said to be in place for Sporting Lisbon’s Viktor Gyokeres, while SSC Napoli’s Victor Osimhen, currently on loan at Galatasaray, has been heavily linked with a move to Old Trafford.
Despite the swirling rumours, Bayern Munich remain unperturbed about Kane’s future. The German giants are confident in retaining their star striker, who has been in scintillating form this season, netting an impressive 29 goals in 29 matches across all competitions.
United’s renewed interest in Kane is particularly intriguing given their past attempts to sign the striker. The club famously pursued Kane for years but ultimately backed away in 2023 when he left Tottenham, largely due to the notoriously difficult negotiations with Spurs chairman Daniel Levy.
While Kane’s goalscoring prowess is undeniable, questions remain about the wisdom of investing heavily in a player who will be 31 by the start of next season. Such a move could potentially conflict with the youthful ethos that manager Ruben Amorim is trying to instil at the club.
