Manchester United youngster Chido Obi-Martin has clarified which of his two name variations he prefers.
The 17-year-old, who was snapped up by the Red Devils last year after obliterating scoring records in Arsenal's academy, has up until this point in his young career been known interchangeably as Chido Obi and Chido Obi-Martin.
According to the Manchester Evening News, the player has asked for 'Martin' - believed to be his middle name - to be dropped going forward. He appears as 'Chido Obi' on United's official website and will be known as such if he goes on to make his senior breakthrough.
Many feel it won't be long until United manager Ruben Amorim gives Obi a shot in the first team. He bagged a ridiculous 32 goals in 20 games for Arsenal's youth teams last season and has scored nine times in 11 outings for United's age groups.
Centre-forward Obi is averaging a goal every 35 minutes in the FA Youth Cup, with his hat-trick against Chelsea U18s on Wednesday taking his tally to seven goals in the competition this campaign.
The teenager rejected professional contract terms at Arsenal to pursue a move to United, where he reportedly felt there was a better chance of breaking into the first team. Joshua Zirkzee and Rasmus Hojlund have both struggled this season, with only five Premier League goals between them.
Obi could be given his senior debut before the end of the campaign, but ironically, the current state of play at the Emirates Stadium suggests that he could have played there even sooner.
Kai Havertz and Gabriel Jesus are both out for the season, leaving Mikel Arteta with only Leandro Trossard to call upon through the middle. There has even been talk of 15-year-old Max Dowman being phased in, providing the Premier League would be willing to bend their rules on players who started the season in a younger age group than U16s.
Obi's rapid progression continues to spark excitement among United fans, and coach Adam Lawrence believes they have a big talent on their hands. "Chido’s a natural goalscorer," he said. "He wants to score goals and get himself into those positions."
The attacking prodigy could rub salt in the wounds of his former club in the next round of the FA Youth Cup, with United drawn against Arsenal in a match which could be played at the Emirates.
