Ruben Amorim, Manager of Manchester United, congratulates Ange Postecoglou, Manager of Tottenham Hotspur, at the end of the Carabao Cup Quarter Final match between Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United at Tottenham Hotspur Stadium on December 19, 2024

Ruben Amorim has admitted Manchester United cannot afford to think they are safe from the threat of relegation.
United are currently down in 13th place in the Premier League, just 12 points above the drop zone, with 14 games left to play. While that gap would appear to be enough to ensure United are safe from the drop, Amorim claimed he and his players cannot afford to think that way.
“With the table as it is, it is impossible to feel comfortable in this moment,” said Amorim. “We just want to win to improve our performance, because we are Manchester United. We need to win the next game, we need to improve and we need to perform better, so there is no comfortable situation in this club.
“Every game until the end of the season is a big game for us, we need to win no matter what, we need to win and to improve the way we play football. Our biggest problem now is Tottenham. But our focus - I said from day one - is to win the Premier League. We can change everything in a few years.

“I don’t know how long it's going to take, but we need to work every day, focus on the little steps and then next summer then we will see.”
United take on fellow strugglers Tottenham on Sunday, with Amorim revealing his respect for Ange Postecoglou, for sticking to his approach and principles, despite poor results. Amorim has found himself in a similar position, with United failing to put together a consistent run of wins, but said he and Postecoglou must stick to their beliefs and way of playing.
“I'm a huge fan of his,” said Amorim. “I’m from a different culture, I’m Portuguese and the Portuguese coaches can adapt. I use one system in the moment, because I believe if you work on that system we adapt that at the same time, but we are not winning games.

“So I can understand the connection between me and Ange. We have the same problems but, with all due respect, I'm in a bigger club with bigger pressure, but I think it’s important to follow all of these principles.
“He’s a good guy, a very good coach, he wants to play football in the right way and that is a very good thing. We know when we choose this kind of profession it’s a good thing but then you have to feel that pressure when you don’t win."
