Railston: Manchester United issue Chido Obi name update as youngster trains with first team

United have comfirmed it is Chido Obi.

Manchester United have issued a name update on young striker Chido Obi.

Chido Obi scored a hat-trick in a dominant FA Youth Cup victory over Chelsea on Wednesday and Ruben Amorim was asked about the exciting youngster again at Friday's press conference.

There is excitement building around Chido Obi and United have confirmed he should no longer be referred to as 'Chido Obi-Martin' because the player has asked for 'Martin' to be dropped.

'Martin' is his middle name and United have confirmed he should be referred to as Chido Obi.

Obi is an exceptional prospect and has seven goals in the FA Youth Cup this season, which is the same number as Alejandro Garnacho scored when United lifted the trophy in 2021/22.

The young striker signed his professional contract with United when he celebrated his 17th birthday in November, which was already agreed when he signed from Arsenal in the summer.

Only the most highly-regarded prospects in the academy are given professional terms when they turn 17 - the age when you can sign a pro deal - and Obi looks to have a bright future ahead of him.

United's head of the academy Nick Cox and the head of academy recruitment Luke Fedorenko were responsible for the deal to sign Obi, who turned down an offer to stay at Arsenal.

United are always on the lookout to add talented youngsters to their academy and completing a deal for Obi was a further signal of the club's intent to continue to be best-in-class in youth football.

Denmark-born Obi joined Arsenal from Danish team KB in 2022 and went from strength to strength last season, scoring 10 goals in a single game against Liverpool.

He has been a youth international for Denmark and England, representing the former in the UEFA European Under-17 Championship qualification campaign last year.

Obi also represented Denmark's Under-18s during the last international break.
